Preface - Geriatrics

Later life pain is a worldwide problem that adversely affects older adults in both developed and developing countries. It is associated with substantial disability that occurs by way of reduced mobility, activity avoidance, falls, depression and anxiety, and social isolation. The negative effects of pain extend well beyond the patient, often disrupting both family and social relationships. It is also important to note that later life pain poses a significant economic burden at a societal level. One recent analysis found that the annual cost of pain in the United States was nearly 30% higher than the costs of cancer and diabetes combined.
